CSA pickup for 8/12/09

Dear CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

Finally, a week of mostly sunshine!!  The veggies are happily growing and went happily sailing!  It has been a wonderful weekend here with my grandkids’ whole family.  They will all be gone tomorrow, and it will be way too quiet here.

We have just found some late blight on some of our potatoes.  Perhaps you have read what damage this is causing across the state and all of New England.  This is the blight which caused the potato famine in Ireland in the 1850’s.  It is the first time it has been a problem in Maine, caused, of course by the wet summer.   I am in communication with MOFGA about how to manage the damage.  We will probably have to dig up the affected potatoes, so look for new potatoes again this week.

As long as we have some dry weather before Wednesday, we plan on having the first blueberries of the season for you!  We are also picking a beautiful summer cabbage and leeks this week.
