We are starting to pick apples this week!! Usually we start the week of the Common Ground Fair, the third weekend in September. So, like the rest of this season, apple harvest is two weeks earlier than usual. What a beautiful growing season it has been!

We are going to skip the Wednesday, 9/15/10, in order to harvest apples and allow for a pickup in October, when we will have fresh cider, apples, and the winter squash available. So remember: NO PICKUP ON 9/15/10, the next one after this week will be 9/22/10. Please let me know if you want to come out for squash, tomatoes and cukes, as they have to be picked anyway.

We have a long list for this week, with some additions and price changes:

Frozen blueberries 3.25/# Beets 3.50/# green peppers 3.50/# hot peppers 3.50/# chard 3./bu onions (storage and sweet Alsa Craigs) 2/# leeks 2/# potatoes 2/# kale 4/# garlic 8/# zukes and patty pans 1,50/# cherry and regular tomatoes 3/# cukes pickling 2/# slicing .60/cuke mixed leaf lettuce 2.50/quarter pound head lettuce (Buttercrunch – yum) 2/head cabbage green storage and green savoy(crinkly) 1.50/# dill 2/bu basil 1.75/bag parsley 2/bu cilantro 2.50/bu leaf celery 2/bu

September is here and there are only 5 more CSA pickups! In the past we have skipped a week in order to leave pickups for cider and fall veggies. I will let you know if we are going to do that this year.

I made a mistake on Alice’s departure date – she is with us through this week, so you still have time to say goodbye to her. What a gift she has been this year!

So here goes for this week:

Hello CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

It is hard to believe we are more than half-way through the CSA season. This week will be the ninth pickup – only 5 more to go.

This week will be Alice’s last CSA Wednesday, as she will leave us on 9/6. She will be going to England and Scotland to WWOOF. Alice grew from apprentice to manager following my hospitalization and surgery. She has done a wonderful job under difficult circumstances. I am very grateful to her! She will be very missed – by us and by Pearl who has been her constant sidekick.

We welcome Mike, a WWOOFer from North Dakota. He just arrived on Saturday, having spent some time on a farm in Lincolnville before coming here. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated helpers here!

So here goes for this week:

frozen blueberries 3.25/# green beans 3.75/# peppers 3/# hot peppers – Jalapenos and anchos	3/# chard 3/bu onions 2/bu leeks 3.50/# potatoes (new dug) 3,50/# garlic 8/# zucchini 1.50/# patty pan yellow squash 1.50/# cherry tomatoes 3/# cucumbers – pickling $2/# slicing 60 cents/cuke green leaf lettuce 2.50/quarter # dill 2/# basil 1.75/bag parsley (flat leaf and curled) 2/bu 2/bu cilantro 2.50/bu cutting celery (leaf celery) 2/bu

As we have been raking in the blueberry barrens, we have found that we have been hit with a late Spring frost, which means that our crop is thin. We have located another source of bulk, frozen blueberries from another organic farm in order to supply your bulk orders.

Please let us know if you have any questions about this. The price will be the same, $3.25/# and they will be packaged in 30# bags.

We will need to arrange specific times for pickup for the bulk berries as we have limited freezer space.

I look forward to hearing from you about this.

Thank you, Charlotte
