8/10 Pickup

Hello CSA and friends of Shalom Orchard and Winery,

The full intensity of blueberry season is upon us and we are all repeating the mantra “it’s only one month out of the year!!”. We are very lucky to have a great crew – Jacob being the top raker of all time, with Molly, our apprentice, running a very close second. Jacob has promised us that he will come home every August for the rest of his natural life! Ric is the best at the winnower – somehow being able to pour so evenly that we almost never have to stop the line. Khimba, in addition to holding up the winnowing line, keeps us all organized. We are tired but glad to have these wonderful, healthy berries and to be a part of this Maine tradition.

This week is a “between” week: the spring veggies are done and the summer veggies are just getting started. We have summer squash, onions, blueberries, basil – for sure. We hope to have young carrots, green beans, swiss chard and parsley. I am leaving the rest of the potatoes for fall digging. This would be a good week to stock up on chicken and lamb. Of course, if there is ever a week that nature doesn’t provide us with enough variety to fill your share, we will make it up when she does.

On August 16, Nick Neaton will join us on the farm. Nick found us through a friend of Molly’s and will stay through the fall and possibly longer. He just finished the University of Minnesota and grew up on a large grain and sheep farm. He wants to stay in the east for a while and work on a different kind of farm. He has been a camp counselor this summer and we are very fortunate have him join us. Molly will be leaving us on 8/21 to return to her senior year at Bates. She will be coming back on the weekends throughout the fall to help with apple harvest. She has been a wonderful help this summer with her knowledge of plants and flowers. She will certainly be missed!

I have received some more recipes – thank you, Kay! Please send us your favorites. The cookbook idea is being well received.

Hope you’re all enjoying the summer!

Thank you,

Charlotte and Jim
