CSA pickup for 9/2/09

Dear CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

We were away this weekend at the Crown of Maine Balloon Festival in Presque Isle this weekend, so this going out a bit late. What beautiful farming country that is up there!

We are very sad to report that our tomatoes have been affected more by the late blight than we thought. As the fruit ripens, it has rotten spots. So our tomato crop will be very small this year. I will be trying to get tomatoes from someone else, but this week we will possibly have one tomato for each of you:( What a hard year this has been. The potato crop in Aroostook County had been affected, but they had sprayed a lot and had it under control. Some fields were completely devastated. We will have potatoes this year, so we feel fortunate in that respect. Such is the uncertainty of farming.

Sarah and Sammie made blueberry jam this weekend! It is a low sugar recipe, and so delicious! So that is on the list along with carrots and beets.

So here goes:

blueberry jam 6.50/12 oz jar blueberry syrup 8/bottle blueberries 3.50/pt, 6/qt peppers 3./# summer squash 3/# broccoli 3.50/# (limited amount as the the side shoots are just starting) basil 2/bu parsley 1.50/bu dill 2/bu lettuce mix 2.00/quarter# bunching onions 2.50/bunch Savoy cabbage 2/# beans 3/75/# leeks 3.50/bu new potatoes 2.50/half # beets 2.50/# carrots 2.50/bu

chicken 3.75/# You can order whole chickens, or quarters. smoked chicken 5.00/# (we will smoke these for you by order- so amazingly delicious!!) eggs 3.50/doz freshly baked breads 5.00/loaf (I will send out another email tonight with Sarah’s bread choices. Swope will be available as always.

Harmony Mill Farm Products:

whole milk 2.50/half gal skim milk 2.50/half gal bottle deposit 2.75 (bring it back each week and there is no additional bottle deposit charge) cream 1.75/half pint ricotta 3.50/#, 2.00/half # cheddar 6/# (please indicate sharp or mild) ricotta-salada 2.25/half#

We have other processed products and yarn for sale. Our CSA members, the Muise family, have put some of their own maple syrup in our store for sale.

Any of our farm products can count toward your share. Harmony Mill Farm products and Muise’s Maple are purchased separately.

Of course, our wines are always available, but can’t count toward your share, as wines cannot be prepaid. Jim has some new selections available this season!!

Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions.

We are looking so forward to seeing you Wed. from 3-5:30PM. Thank you for your patience at pickup if things get a bit hectic!

Thank you, Charlotte

Breads

Dear CSA,

Because of the increased work of blueberries, Sarah will not be making yeast breads. I will continue to make swope breads. After blueberry season we will resume the wonderful breads Sarah makes! Thank you, Charlotte

CSA pickup for 8/26/09

Dear CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

We are very thankful that at least some of our tomatoes have survived late blight. They are just starting to ripen now. We have a few peppers for you this week – maybe one per member! But it is great that these heat-loving veggies are ripening! We made our blueberry syrup over the weekend, so that is a new item on the list. This syrup is made with 20# berries, 1 1/4 cup organic honey, and 1/4 cup organic lemon juice. It is a thick and sauce-like – very fresh and barely sweet. It is so good on pancakes, ice cream and whatever! Soon there will be pesto!

So here goes:

blueberry syrup 8/bottle blueberries 3.50/pt, 6/qt summer squash 3/# broccoli 3.50/# (limited amount as the the side shoots are just starting) basil 2/bu parsley 1.50/bu dill 2/bu lettuce mix 2.00/quarter# bunching onions 2.50/bunch Savoy cabbage 2/# beans 3/75/# leeks 3.50/bu new potatoes 2.50/half #

chicken 3.75/# You can order whole chickens, or quarters. smoked chicken 5.00/# (we will smoke these for you by order- so amazingly delicious!!) eggs 3.50/doz freshly baked breads 5.00/loaf (I will send out another email tonight with Sarah’s bread choices. Swope will be available as always.
