September 26 Pickup

Dear CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

It seems Verizon Internet was down over a huge area for the last couple of days, including ours, so I am sorry this could not go out before now.

Remember that after tomorrow, we will skip pickups until Oct. 17, when we will have a big pickup of storage crops, cider, lamb and orders for chicken, which will be ready at the end of October. This will be a good time to lay in for winter storage and to use any skipped pickups, so please try to figure out if you have some accumulated credit, and how much. That bookkeeping is more than I can keep up with!!

Then we will start cooking and will have our Harvest Dinner, our gift to you, on Saturday, Oct. 27. More details on that later. SAVE THE DATE!

Here’s what we have for this week:

apples 1.50/# cabbage (green and red) 1/# (on sale – time to make saurerkraut and kimchi!!) broccoli 3/# summer squash 2/# (last week) potatoes (including fingerlings) 2/50/# onions 2/5/# carrots 2/# beets 2/# leeks 3/# tomatoes 3/# cherry tomatoes 3/pt basil 2/4oz (could be the last week) fennel 3/bulb (so good in soups and stirfry) garlic 7/# pesto 1.50/oz (packaged in 4-6 oz containers) blueberry jam 6/12 oz jar

We are looking forward to seeing you between 3-5:30 tomorrow!

Thank you,

September 19 Pickup

Dear CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

We have started “pick your own” apples and we will begin making cider the week of September 24!!!! The orchard is beautiful and we are blessed with many organic, table quality apples. For organic growers this is a miracle as we are unable to use (nor would we want to!) many sprays that are really effective against scab and certain devastating pests. This has been a wonderful growing year and we are very thankful! So, bring your families and enjoy a day in the orchard!

We took lambs to the butcher and will have the meat back next week. I will post the prices then. This is a good time to fill your freezer! Also, let me know your orders for chicken for the freezer, which will be available toward the end of October.

It is very hard to believe that this week is the 12th pickup. What we have done in the past is have 13 pickups and then skip a couple of weeks and have one final, end of the harvest shopping day. The delay is too allow all of the storage crops to finish up and to have plenty of apples and cider available. So I am proposing that we have a pickup next week, 9/26, and then skip until 10/17 for the storage crop pickup. Please let me know your thoughts. During the two weeks of no pickups, we will still be harvesting anything left and can certainly arrange to fill some orders for those of you who have missed pickups.

So here goes for this week:

apples (Wolf Rivers, Macs and Corts) 1.50/# (pick your own-1.25/#) tomatoes 3/#

cherry tomatoes 3/pt

peppers 3.99/#

summer squash 2/#

beets 2/#

leeks 3/bu

onions 2.50/#

beans 3/#

cabbage (red and green) 1.50/#

basil 2/4oz

homemade pesto 1.50/oz

wholeberry blueberry jam 6/12oz

forzen berries 3.25/# (packed in 5# baga)

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE NOT PICKED UP YOUR FROZEN BERRY ORDER!!! Jim is anxious to make blueberry wine and I don’t want anyone’s order to end up as wine!

See you Wed., 3:00 – 5:30.

Thank you, Charlotte

OOOOOPS!!! Typo on 9/12 pickup

Dear CSA and Friends of Shalom Orchard,

I goofed and gave a price for frozen berries as 1.25/#. This should read 3.25/#, or 16.25 for a 5# bag. I am so sorry for any inconvenience!

Hope to see you later today!

Thank you, Charlotte
